history

First swimming spots

Bathing area (around 1905) in the Hüttertal, which was almost treeless at the time

At the end of the 19th century it was common practice to set up strictly separate bathing facilities for men and women. In 1868, at the behest of the city council, the bathing areas in Radeberg were regulated. The Große Röder , the Schwarze Röder and the mill ditches running along them were dammed, these dams used both the owners of the mills and the people of Radeberg for swimming.

In the Hüttertal , near the point over which the bridge of the Großerkmannsdorf / Radeberg bypass of the S177 has been running since 2008 , there was a bathing establishment for men and older boys . For the year 1868 the erection of simple wooden sheds there is handed down, which served as changing rooms. Boys under 10 years of age bathed in the mill ditch of the Herrenmühle, for girls and women a place was provided at the Schwarzen Röder not far from the Mittelmühle. Radeberg's first bathhouse opened in Hüttertal in 1883. A men's bath was set up in 1890 directly at the weir of the castle mill, this location was regulated with the city administration until 1912. The bathing area for women and girls changed to the weir of the Bergmühle in 1890, and in 1904 an additional women’s bathing area, like the men’s place at the castle mill, was established. In addition, the existence of a military bathing area near the castle mill is recorded at the turn of the century.

The river bathing committee, founded in 1897, presented the city of Radeberg with the first proposals for the construction of a general city pool in 1904. These plans became more specific in 1910, and finally in 1911 the construction of the baths was decided.

Stadtbad

Stadtbad 1913

The construction of the new city bath on the course of the Große Röder on today's waterway began in 1912. The basin was filled with Röder water from the mill ditch of the mountain mill. On July 1, 1913, the facility with a swimming pool was ceremoniously opened and handed over to the population. A wooden diving platform was built in 1914, this was replaced in 1930 with a steel construction. In the 1960s, the diving facility was dismantled due to the fact that the pool was too shallow according to the new regulations. The area and the buildings of the bath were constantly expanded and developed until the outbreak of the Second World War .

In the 1950s, for hygienic reasons, planning began to replace the filling of the bath with Röder water with drinking water. Pumping systems, piping systems and a simple system for chlorinating the water were built. The bathroom received a children's pool , new sanitary facilities and a sewage treatment plant. In the 1970s, the swimming pool was expanded into a 50 meter long competition pool. In addition, all the facilities and equipment in the pool were completely renewed. A separate kiosk in the bathroom took care of the bathing guests.

After the fall of the Wall , the bathroom was again extensively renovated. The facility was rebuilt in 1999 to be handicapped accessible . The swimmer area was expanded in the 2000s to a 2-pool facility completely lined with stainless steel, and the paddling pool was also renewed with a stainless steel version. A new water treatment system was installed, the open spaces and outdoor facilities were redesigned.

In 2015, a record number of visitors was recorded with over 36,000 guests. The daily record was reached in 2009 with 1,723 bathers.

Swimming

For many decades there was an active and successful swimming scene in Radeberg. The first association was founded in 1914, but dissolved again in the same year due to the outbreak of war . In 1920 the municipal Radeberg swimming club (SVR) and the workers swimming club Freie Schwimmer were founded . The development of the pool was strongly promoted by the numerous active athletes. Numerous regional and Saxon championships were won in the first few years. In addition to swimming , the clubs were also active in water polo and lifeguarding . After the seizure of power of the NSDAP of workers sport was banned, many athletes alternated in the SVR. After the Second World War, the Sachsenwerk sports association took over the organization of the Radeberg swimming sport, later the Rafena -Werke and then the Robotron combine . The anniversary event 70 years of sport swimming in Radeberg in 1990 was the last major celebration of swimming in the city. For financial reasons, the swimming section was dissolved by the Radeberger Sportverein in 1995.

Events

Ice bathing takes place regularly in winter in the Stadtbad . In the summer months, night bathing events are regularly held under floodlights. The town's students regularly swim for the challenge cup of the Radeberg schools . The Badfest Radeberg takes place at different intervals .

From 2002 to 2008 the Scottish Highland Games Radeberg were held annually in the Stadtbad . It was a folk festival-like event that attracted numerous strength athletes and spectators to Radeberg every year. Competitions were in typical disciplines such as tossing the caber (Tossing the caber) weight throw high (weight for height) and putting the stone (Putting the stone) is performed. From 2005 women also took part in the competitions. The Highland Games were originally organized as part of the Badfest, but developed into an independent series of events. From 2009 the Highland Games were no longer held on the grounds of the municipal swimming pool, but on a nearby sports field. In 2013 the Stadtbadverein handed over the organization of the competitions to another organizer, as it could no longer guarantee that the competitions would run smoothly in parallel to the regular bathing operations.

The annual Hüttertallauf , a fun run event that starts on the Radeberger Marktplatz and leads across the Hüttertal, ends with the finish line and the subsequent trophy ceremony in the Stadtbad.
