The Dormagen City Library is a public library of the city of Dormagen . It was founded in 1964 and has been housed in its own building at Marktplatz 1 since 1995.

history

At the end of July 1964, the municipal library was opened as the Dormagen official library in Kölner Straße 28 with a collection of 1,319 volumes under the direction of Fritz Werner. In addition to a state grant and budget funds from the Dormagen Office, the financial basis was a specific donation from Bayer AG of 8,000 marks and a donation from Pfeifer & Langen of 1,000 marks. From 1964 to 1970, the inventory number increased sevenfold with almost 10,000 books and the number of loans to over 20,000 in 1970.

In January 1971 the first branch in the district of Hackenbroich was opened at Moselstrasse 6-8 with 2,600 volumes, followed in August 1971 by the second branch in the district of Horrem in Horremer Strasse 4 with 3,100 volumes. At the end of 1971 the total inventory of the city library comprised approximately 16,000 volumes. In August 1972, the city library began its event services with reading hours for 6 to 12 year old children. In October 1973 the culture committee suggested the establishment of a "regional historical collection" at the city library.

The first author reading with Tilman Röhrig took place in February 1974 . In July 1974, the Hackenbroich branch was expanded to include a children's and youth library in the converted basement. With 220 foreign-language books donated, mainly children's books, the foundation for the “foreign-language department” in the city library was laid in March 1975. In the same year they began to borrow cassettes . For this purpose, 200 cassettes were initially purchased.

As a result of the regional reform in the course of the Düsseldorf Act , the libraries in Stürzelberg and Zons were added as third and fourth branches of the Dormagen city library. In July 1976 the city library and the church libraries arranged regular inventory agreements and a central catalog located in the main office of the city library. This should enable a loan in the city area. Also in 1976 the Horrem branch moved to larger premises in Heesenstrasse.

The main office of the city library moved to Römerstraße 18 in 1977. In February 1979 the Dormagen city library replaced the Grevenbroich city library as the central library . In April 1980, the expanded media offering in the Hackenbroich branch with 70 games was launched with “Games for Borrowing”.

In June 1980 the city library opened its main office at Kölner Straße 41 with a library for adults and children, almost 20,000 books, 25 continuously updated magazines, 8 daily and weekly magazines, 17 slide series, almost 400 cassettes and 165 games. In the same year the branch in Stürzelberg was closed. In December 1980 the number of “active” readers was 5,352. This increases the number of those who regularly use the Dormagen city library by 668 compared to 1979.

The Zons branch moved to Schloßstraße 2-4 in January 1981. 10,700 books, 120 cassettes, 150 games, 15 magazines and 4 newspapers are offered on an area of 330 m². In 1981 a total of 11,400 media were available.

In the meantime, however, only the main office at Marktplatz 1 still exists.
