The City Library Göttingen is approximately 190,000 media - in addition to books , among others DVDs, CD-ROMs , maps, sheet music, audio books and games - a center for providing information and entertainment. An online catalog provides information on the current media offer.

Internet workstations (also in all branches), office, CD-ROM and game PCs, Internet training courses, guided tours of the library , special offers for kindergartens and schools as well as an extensive calendar of events complete the offer. The focus of the event work is the lap children program, reading for children and adults as well as activities for senior citizens and cooperation with schools.

In addition to an extensive collection for adults, the central library also offers a separate children's library as well as a youth and parents' area. The library system also includes branches in the districts of Elliehausen, Geismar, Grone, Nikolausberg, Roringen and Weende. As a branch on the Internet, the “Onleihe” provides media for download.

On April 8, 2008 the former town house, the seat of the Göttingen City Library, was named after the international lawyer Thomas Buergenthal . The American lawyer of German-Jewish origin once found his mother in Göttingen after surviving two ghettos, the Auschwitz concentration camp and the so-called death march to Sachsenhausen as a child.

Since October 2009, users of the central library have been able to borrow their media at three self-check-out terminals. Since February 2010, the city library has been able to adorn itself with the title "Library with Quality and Seal", which it was awarded for a period of three years under the certification program for public libraries in Lower Saxony.
