First mention 812

On September 20, 812, the city church was consecrated by the Archbishop of Mainz, Richulf, St. Margaret . At that time it was a three-aisled, Romanesque columned basilica , which was built on behalf of the Fulda abbot Ratgar .

11./12. century

In the second half of the 11th century, the basilica was extended by a transverse building with a tower on the east side. In the 12th century the transverse structure and tower were raised.

13./14. century

Towards the end of the 13th century, the church was expanded to include a choir, a sacristy and a crypt. In the 14th century the Barbarakapelle was built and the tower got its octagonal structure. The four-step west portal was installed.

16./17. century

In the 16th century, a small stair tower was added on the north and south side, through which one could get to the two galleries. In the 17th century the tower got its 30 m high pointed helmet.

Renovation 1963–1966

In the course of the renovation work in the years 1963–1966, the two galleries that were accessible via the stair towers in the south and north were removed. In return, a new gallery was built in the west house.

Renovation 2000–2009

In the period between 2000 and 2009 the city church was completely renovated. The extensive restoration work included the entire roof and ceiling construction, the tower, the belfry and the stucco ceiling.

organ

In the middle of the 17th century there are two organs in the church, a larger western organ and a small positive choir. The listed, baroque organ prospect comes from Jost Eichenberg from Niederaula. In 1719 he created a one-manual work with around twelve registers , which originally stood on the gallery above the west portal. In 1801 Johann-Markus Oestreich added a second manual and several new parts. In 1938 the Förster & Nicolaus company built a new organ behind the old prospectus. The instrument had electric cone chests and 21 stops, divided into two manuals and a pedal . After the church was renovated in the 1960s, the organ was completely renovated and expanded in 1968. Since then, it has been located on the south wall above the south portal and has 22 registers on electrical sliding drawers .
