Grusonia invicta is a species of plant in the genus Grusonia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet invicta means '(lat. Invictus) undefeated, unsurpassed, insurmountable'. A common name is "Dagger Cholla".
description
Grusonia invicta grows low, is richly branched and forms dense mats up to 2 meters in diameter and 20 to 45 centimeters in height. The interwoven shoots are upright to leaning. Their broad, obovate to club-shaped, clearly humped shoot sections are 8 to 15 centimeters long and have a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters. The humps are 2 to 5 inches long, 1 to 2 inches wide and 1 inch high. The almost circular, gray woolen areoles on it reach up to 1.5 centimeters in diameter. Glochids are rarely present. The ten to 25 very stiff thorns are gray with a darker tip. They are spreading to curved downwards, strongly flattened and square. The thorns are 1 to 5 inches long and up to 3 millimeters wide at their base.
The yellow flowers reach a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters. Your pericarpel is very thorny. The egg-shaped fruits are moderately fleshy. They are 4 to 5 inches long and have a diameter of 2.5 to 3 inches.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Grusonia invicta is widespread on the Mexican Baja California peninsula at altitudes of up to 200 meters.
It was first described as Opuntia invicta in 1889 by Townshend Stith Brandegee . Edward Frederick Anderson placed the species in the genus Grusonia in 1999 . A synonym is Corynopuntia invicta (Brandegee) FMKnuth (1936).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
