St. Mary's Prettin

The listed town church of St. Marien Prettin is a three-nave hall church built in brick from the early 14th century with a protruding transept. It is located in the city of Prettin , a district of the city of Annaburg . The first written mention of the church can be found in a document from 1315, in which the Meißner bishop confirms the patronage right over the church granted to the Antonites by Elector Rudolf I of Saxony - Wittenberg. The building, initially erected as a cruciform church, did not have its aisles until 1582.

description

building

The building of the church is a Gothic stepped hall with a protruding transept and a two-bay rectangular choir. The side aisles are each one yoke shorter than the three-bay central nave. There is a two-storey sacristy extension between the choir and the arm of the north cross . The oldest parts of the church that still exist today are two pedestals designed as heads on the outer buttresses of the southern chancel. The sandstone vine friezes at the end of the south arch of the transept are also part of it. On the north side aisle there is a late Gothic portal from the end of the 15th century. The late Renaissance portal, also located on the south side, is a foundation of Electress Hedwig and dates from 1609. The church tower was built in 1852 as a square tower with a gable roof in Gothic shapes . The construction of the hexagonal spire in 1886 gave the tower a total height of 74 meters. This extension also created a viewing platform 25 meters high. In the tower hall there are nine older sandstone tombs and epitaphs . The oldest of the tombstones comes from Hans von Seebach, a bailiff of Lichtenburg Castle , who died on December 19, 1576.

Furnishing

altar

The altarpiece was composed of two late Gothic carved altars. The winged altar, which can no longer be moved today, dates from around 1490, a small triptych as an altarpiece is dated to 1520. It was probably made by a North German or Dutch master of unknown origin at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century. In the wings depictions of the New Testament scenes of the Last Supper, Gethsemane, Carrying of the Cross and Entombment can be seen. On the back of the wing there are four painted scenes of the legend of Antonius. Saints Bartholomew, Barbara and Andreas can be seen in the shrine of the altar, Augustine and Christophorus on the left wing, Dorothea and Agnes on the right wing. The framing of the altar with architrave and curved work dates from 1614. The main part shows the crucifixion scene as a passion altar. On the shield of a soldier you can see the Danish coat of arms, a monogram of Electress Hedwig and the year 1614 in memory of her foundation to the church.

pulpit

There are two pulpits in the church. Today's sermon pulpit in neo-Gothic form was built in the chancel in 1899. A stone round pulpit in the form of the Renaissance dates from 1582. The crown-shaped sound cover is made of wood and is dated to 1617.

Baptismal font

The baptismal bowl on the baptismal font dates from 1800. The baptismal font itself dates from 1899.

organ

The organ was built in 1842/43 by the organ builder Johann Friedrich Schulze from Paulinzella .

Bells

In the roof turret of the church there are three bronze bells, the oldest from the end of the 14th century, the others from 1541 and 1556. At the end of the Second World War , the bells of the church were already in a bell cemetery to be melted down for the armaments industry . There they were probably discovered and saved by a Prettinist.

window

The coat of arms of Electress Hedwig can be seen in the east window of the southern transverse arm. The stained glass is dated to the year 1628. The rest of the glazing of the building goes back to a foundation of the Electress herself.

Others

On the north wall of the choir, inside the church, there is a portrait of Electress Hedwig from 1628. A portrait of Martin Luther comes from the beginning of the 17th century. A pastor's portrait from around 1700 is above the south portal. In 1899 the stalls, the organ loft, the candlesticks and the baptismal font of the church were replaced during a renovation. Remains of the formerly existing baptismal font from the end of the 15th century are in the tower hall. This is a sandstone dome with a lily frieze.
