The Stadtmuseum Kaufbeuren is a cultural history museum with a focus on the history of the city in Kaufbeuren . After several years of renovation, it has been presenting a permanent exhibition on four floors in a historic old town building since 2013, which illuminates the history of the imperial city of Kaufbeuren with all its interdependencies in economic and social history.

history

Founded in 1879, the Kaufbeuren City Museum is one of the oldest museums in Bavarian Swabia. The origin of the museum is the so-called “local museum”, which was set up by the Kaufbeuren art dealer and magistrate Willibald Filser (1831–1895) in the town hall of Kaufbeuren. Exhibits on the city's history were presented in two rooms. From 1880 the "local museum" was also open to the public. In 1901, on the initiative of curator Christian Frank , who had been museum curator since 1901, and the district administrator Gustav von Kahr, the exhibition “Folk Art in the Allgäu” was created. The exhibition was presented in the building of the agricultural school at Kaisergäßchen 12. Due to its great, supra-regional success, part of the presentation was permanently installed as the “Museum for Folk Art” in the Kaisergäßchen. In 1928, a “Ganghofer room” was set up in the same building, furnished with objects from the estate of the writer Ludwig Ganghofer , who died in 1920 and was born in Kaufbeuren . In 1934 the various museum collections were brought together under one roof. The reason for this was that the city administration needed the offices in the town hall itself. Under the direction of the chief administrative inspector Fritz Schmitt (1888–1966), the Kaufbeurer Museum was permanently established in the Kaisergäßchen with the support of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation with its director Georg Lill and the conservator Joseph Maria Ritz . The Kaufbeuren local history museum was reopened there on November 18, 1934. In 1936 the exhibition was expanded to include the crucifix collection of the Irsee pastor Richard Wiebel (1869–1945).

In 2002 the museum had to be closed due to static problems. On June 7, 2013 the Stadtmuseum Kaufbeuren was reopened after more than ten years of closure and extensive renovation and expansion of the museum building.

collection

Objects relating to the history of the city of Kaufbeuren form the basis of the collection. A collection of around 300 crucifixes from nine centuries is remarkable , the spectrum of which ranges from works of art from ecclesiastical and monastic life to crosses from the field of popular piety. Also outstanding is a collection of around 80 Protestant reverse glass pictures that were created in Kaufbeuren in the second half of the 18th century and can be publicly researched on the bavarikon platform . The city museum owns substantial parts of the private estate of the successful author Ludwig Ganghofer. In addition, the museum's collection includes a series of rustic parlor furnishings and folklore objects that have been on display in the museum since the 1901 “Folk Art in Allgäu” exhibition.

Exhibition concept

Since reopening in 2013, the city museum has a total of five different departments in the permanent exhibition, which also present different areas of the collection:

  • Crosses and saints : About the crucifix collection and the holy Crescentia of Kaufbeuren (on the ground floor)
  • Traces of the city : On the history of the imperial city of Kaufbeuren, Kaufbeuren in the 19th and 20th centuries (1st floor)
  • From the beautiful things in life : with rustic room furnishings that go back to the exhibition “Folk Art in Allgäu” from 1901 and a presentation by the three exhibition organizers, the local researcher Christian Frank, Gustav von Kahr, the former Kaufbeurer district official and later Bavarian Prime Minister as well the architect Franz Zell .
  • Typical Kaufbeuren : About the biconfessional imperial city of Kaufbeuren and the difficult coexistence of the various denominations in the city, the Protestant reverse glass paintings and textile production in the city (2nd floor)
  • With a sharp pen : Exhibition about the city's literary sons and daughters Hans Magnus Enzensberger , Ludwig Ganghofer, Sophie la Roche and Christian Jakob Wagenseil (3rd floor)

The Stadtmuseum Kaufbeuren has been barrier-free since the renovation. The permanent exhibition includes interactive offers, media stations, audio guides (German and English) and listening stations.

Confrontation with National Socialism

Since 2015, the Stadtmuseum Kaufbeuren has been dealing more intensively with the city's history during the National Socialist era . The trigger for this were critical voices in the design of the permanent exhibition on the 20th century and on the Nazi era. The museum took the criticism as an opportunity to publicly deal with it and held a panel discussion on January 20, 2016 under the title “The design of exhibitions during the Nazi era - dealing with objects”. For the event, which is part of the special exhibition In Memoriam. “Euthanasia” took place under National Socialism , an expert committee was invited with exhibition organizers and museum experts. Following the panel discussion, the Stadtmuseum Kaufbeuren commissioned a contemporary historian to prepare an expert opinion on the permanent exhibition. The report confirmed the criticism of the current presentation and recommended a revision of the existing exhibition area. In 2018, the City Museum launched a call for collections to collect objects from the Nazi era in Kaufbeur, as the City Museum's collection had many gaps in this area. This call for collections as well as local historical research during the Nazi era formed the basis for the participatory exhibition project “Kaufbeuren under the swastika. A city goes in search of traces ”, which began in October 2018. For over a year the city museum worked with a total of ten local cooperation partners to develop content for a special exhibition and its accompanying program. This special exhibition was made possible by funding from the Federal Cultural Foundation and opened on October 31, 2019. Following the exhibition project, the City of Kaufbeuren's cultural committee will decide in November 2020 whether the city museum's permanent exhibition should be redesigned based on the content and objects developed. On the initiative of the city museum, stumbling blocks will be laid for the first time in September 2020 in memory of the Kaufbeur victims of National Socialism. In parallel to the exhibition project, the City Museum started a provenance research project in 2018 , in which acquisitions from the collection from 1932 to 1964 are examined. The aim is to fully clarify the origin of the objects. For the Nazi era, it must be determined whether objects were illegally withdrawn from previous Jewish owners or whether they were confiscated as a result of persecution.
