The city park in Bernau near Berlin was created in the 17th century when parts of the ramparts were leveled and ditches were filled in. Trees, bushes and grass grew on the natural area . It served as a pasture and was popularly called the enclosure . The conversion to a park took place in the 19th century. The areas that became vacant served as an urban trucking area, as an open-air stage , for a nursery and as a school garden. A playground has been preserved.

Details about the park

Standing couple

The park area with many old trees includes several ponds and the ramparts along the former city fortifications. It is not clearly delimited. In 2010, the city battled a rat infestation in the park. The rodents undermined trees, ponds and moats. By laying bait , the population of the animals was reduced.

There are several sculptures in the park , some since the 1980s, including the standing couple by the sculptor Margit Schötschel-Gabriel in cooperation with Jasmin-Sophie Schneidewind and Conrad Ambrée. In 2011, further works were added in the course of an International Sculpture Symposium by artists in the open air, which opened on October 5, 2011 . The initiator of the exhibition was the German sculptor Rudolf J. Kaltenbach , who, together with his colleague Silvia Christine Fohrer, is also responsible for Stones Without Borders . The two see themselves in line with the road of peace project by the humanist Otto Freundlich . Since then, Kaltenbach's work Wandlung Doppelkreuz has been in the park.

The parking area is used for the annual Hussite Festival in May / June and for running events. The VHS conducts herbal seminars. The site is also the location of the city gardener's house and the office for school administration, cultural and youth affairs.
