Architecture and history

The park was created after the Wittenberg fortifications had been abandoned, in the area of the former moat ring that spanned the old town. The park was laid out from 1873 by Fritz Eunike . After 1904 Paul Leonhardt was busy with the work on the park.

Various evidence of the fortifications have been preserved in the park, including the artillery car hall No. 3 . There are also several monuments in the park, such as the Batteriestein , the Entfestigungsstein and the Fritz Eunike Monument . The swan pond is located in the northern part of the park .

The park is of particular importance in terms of urban history and urban development. On the one hand, it marks the area of the former fortifications and the transition from the historic old town to the area of urban expansion from the Wilhelminian era . In its southern area, on the other hand, it is the prerequisite for the preservation of the traditional city panorama, as it includes parts of the undeveloped area between the Elbe flowing south and the old town.

The park is listed as a monument area in the local monument register under registration number 094 36012 .
