King Ludwig I (until 1848) and after him Bishop Heinrich von Hofstätter were able to prevent the construction of a Protestant church in Passau for years. The clergyman Andreas Rutz founded the Protestant school in the city in 1851 and became the driving force behind the construction of a Protestant church. The project was realized under Franz Christoph Wilhelm Bauer, who had worked there as vicar since 1853 . The church was designed by the Munich court architect Friedrich Bürklein, who waived a fee and paid the drawing assistants himself.

The foundation stone was laid on November 5, 1856. The inauguration took place on July 17, 1859. Bauer was the first pastor of the community until 1865 and built the parish and school house next to the church.

The church was last extensively renovated until October 25, 2017.

Building description

The Matthäuskirche is a three-aisled stacked church with six bays and designed in the neo-Gothic style. The interior is characterized by a steel construction gallery that is reminiscent of the “industrial Gothic” secular buildings of the 19th century. The needle-shaped north tower rises above the entrance. It is flanked by two pointed, Gothic pinnacles with granite flowers.

Furnishing

The former altarpiece came from Otto Patzig and was a gift from the Nuremberg Protestants. The sculptor Karlheinz Hoffmann created a large figure of Christ in the 1950s, it has been hung lower since then. The prayer stone dates from 2017.

A plaque commemorates the theologian and reformer Leonhard Kaiser , who was burned as a heretic in Schärding in 1527 .
