The Stadttheater in Mödling ( Lower Austria ) was built from 1911 to 1912 as the "Mödlinger Bühne" as a private theater by the cinema pioneer, variety artist and actor Carl Juhász in Art Nouveau style. But Juhász soon sold it and in 1920 it came into the possession of the city of Mödling. However, he received a lease. He ran the cinema with his wife until his death in 1940. She continued to run it until 1969, before the concession fell to the city.

The city theater served as a guest theater and cinema theater for decades.

After it was taken over by the city, it was extensively renovated in 1994. Under the direction of Felix Dvorak , the Mödling comedy games played here every summer until 2004, with great success. in which mimes like Johanna von Koczian , Gusti Wolf , Aglaja Schmid , Anita Ammersfeld , Bert Fortell and Gideon Singer participated. Daniela Fally and Sabine Petzl took the first steps on the stage with Dvorak.

Since 1998 it has been run year-round under the directorship of Bruno Max and his company " Theater zum Fürchten " as the largest non-state theater in Lower Austria. The program covers the entire spectrum of classical and modern spoken theater. Two Lower Austrian cultural awards and two Nestroy nominations speak for the high quality. More than 380 actors have participated in the more than 220 in-house productions since 1998. Since summer 2011, the city theater has also been available to the independent theater group teatro during the theater holidays . The city theater currently has 301 seats. The company is currently subsidized by the city of Mödling, the state of Lower Austria and the federal government.
