history

In 1869, the French entrepreneur Johann Anton Sabey built the first gas works and, for a fee, lights Coesfeld's streets. In 1879 the city bought the gas works. For this purpose, the so-called Kamphues dagger , a Gothic dagger from the early 14th century, and a bronze aquamanile from the holdings of the city archive were sold for 13,000 marks. The municipal utility in Coesfeld begins with the first in-house operation. In 1920, Elektrizitätswerk Westfalen AG connected the city of Coesfeld to the electrical transmission network. Selling, distributing and delivering the electricity to households and businesses were the tasks of the city, which immediately began building the low-voltage network.

In 1907 the municipal waterworks on Coesfelder Berg went into operation. In 1939, the city combined the gas, water and electricity works into one company. This was the hour of birth of the “Stadtwerke Coesfeld i. W. ". In 1945 Allied bombs destroyed the administration building, the gas works, two transformer stations and most of the house connections for electricity and water. In 1950, electricity and water flowed smoothly again. In 1955, ten years after the gasworks had been destroyed, the liquid gas cracking plant went into operation.

In 1968 the Stadtwerke took over the 10 kV network from the VEW . In 1976 Coesfeld was connected to the Emden – Werne natural gas pipeline. In 1979 the municipal utilities also supplied Rosendahl with water. A little later, Legden and Asbeck were integrated into the supply network. In 1983, the company was reorganized into a private company. In 1988 the municipal utilities bought the power grid in the parish of Coesfeld from the VEW. In 1994 the Stadtwerke became part of a holding company that brought together the businesses of the city of Coesfeld under one roof. In 1994 the Stadtwerke bought the electricity network in Lette from VEW.

In 2001, the Stadtwerke invested 3.2 million marks in the new southern switchgear building, which increases the security of supply and created greater independence from electricity suppliers.

In 2003, the municipal utilities built a natural gas filling station. In 2005, the Stadtwerke invested a further 5.6 million euros in the secure supply of natural gas and water. Among other things, the southern substation was connected to the RWE high-voltage network. In 2008 the municipal utilities participated with 5 MW in the construction of GEKKO, RWE's joint hard coal power plant in Hamm-Uentrop. The investment made Stadtwerke more independent of the large power generation companies in the long term. Stadtwerke also invested 400,000 euros in a photovoltaic system in Coesfeld.

In 2009, the public utilities commissioned the new Coesfeld waterworks on the Wildbahn. The ultra-modern plant replaces the old waterworks in the same place and ensures the water supply in Coesfeld and the region for the next few decades. In 2010, the Stadtwerke gave the go-ahead for electromobility in Coesfeld and opened the first e-filling station in Coesfeld's market garage on September 1st.

In 2010 the Stadtwerke opened the service center at Marktplatz 10 in order to offer their customers even more proximity and even more on-site service.

In 2012, Stadtwerke Westmünsterland Energiekooperation was founded, an independent cooperation company of the four existing municipal utilities Ahaus, Coesfeld, Dülmen and SVS (Stadtlohn, Vreden and Südlohn). As a regional cooperation company, Stadtwerke Westmünsterland was founded specifically for the targeted supply of electricity and gas to business customers.

In 2014, Stadtwerke Coesfeld and the city of Coesfeld signed the concession agreements for supplying the people of Coesfeld with natural gas, electricity and water. The new contracts for electricity and gas have a term of 20 years. The concession contract for water even runs until the end of 2039.

2016 The managing director of Stadtwerke Coesfeld, Markus Hilkenbach, will also become managing director of Stadtwerke Borken on February 1, 2016. Both energy suppliers start their cooperation.

2018 The EMERGY Führungs- und Servicegesellschaft mbH is founded in January by the cities of Borken and Coesfeld. The aim of EMERGY is the long-term and strategic development of the two companies Stadtwerke Borken / Westf. GmbH and business operations of the city of Coesfeld GmbH. Furthermore, the competitiveness and profitability of both structures are to be strengthened and expanded.

2020 Ron Keßeler takes over the management of the companies Stadtwerke Coesfeld, Stadtwerke Borken and EMERGY management and service company in the EMERGY group on March 1, 2020.
