The Stadtwerke Hameln are a municipal energy utilities , which the city Hameln in Lower Saxony with gas , electricity , water and telecommunications offering supplies and other services.
On November 1, 1904, the municipal light and water works put the first power station into operation. It was located on the gas works site on Hafenstrasse. In 1913 the coal-fired power station of the AEG subsidiary Elektrizitäts-Lieferungs-Gesellschaft (ELG) in Afferde went into operation, and additional electrical power was imported via the power distribution network of the city of Hameln. In the 1920s, in the course of the expansion of the power cable network, the company switched from direct current to the three-phase current that is still common today . In 1934 it was renamed Stadtwerke Hameln .
The hydropower plants at the Hameln barrage were taken over in 1999. GWS Stadtwerke Hameln GmbH has also been an internet provider since 2001 . In addition, an Internet connection via radio has been offered in around 110 localities since 2005.
As part of the national weather service of Meteomedia GmbH, the Hameln public utility operates its own weather station, the data of which is published on the Internet. Stadtwerke Hameln has held a 49% stake in Mindener Stadtwerke since 2013 .
