The Hameln barrage in the city of Hameln is the only barrage in the Upper Weser . It consists of fixed weirs , the upper weir and the lower weir . Since 1733 there has been a (several times renewed) lock for shipping on the river island (Werder), which lies between the upper and lower weirs , which is now the responsibility of the waterways and shipping office of Hann. Münden lies. The gradient of the barrage has been used by Hamelin water mills since the 15th century . Even today, the Hameln public utilities operate the Alte Schleuse and Pfortmühle hydroelectric power stations here . Around 12 million kWh of energy, which corresponds to five percent of the demand in Hameln, are produced annually by these hydropower plants. The operators are only allowed to divert a maximum of 112 m³ / s Weser water or so much for the power plants that the upper weir does not run dry.

history

The oldest, larger river construction in the Oberweser is probably the weir in Hameln, the beginnings of which go back 1000 years and which existed under constant improvement until the end of the 14th century. It was built on the one hand to operate the town's mills with the dammed water. On the other hand, it was an obstacle for shipping. After an extreme flood in 1342, the Weser changed its course and a new weir was built, which had a very small passage, the Hamelner Loch , so that the ships only unloaded and the goods had to be offered for a fee in the city ( stacking right ). The empty ships then had to be pulled over the weir. This source of income for the city dried up with the construction of the first lock in the middle of the 18th century.

Today's weirs date from the 1880s, they were completely renovated at the beginning of the 21st century.

Alte Schleuse hydropower plant

The Alte Schleuse hydropower plant has existed on the Weser Island since 1988 in the area of the old lock, built around 1870, which was still used as an alternative lock until 1987. It contains two identical turbines and generators with built-in Kaplan geared tubular turbines . The water flows here through the turbine and then left and right around a walk-in housing in which the gear unit and the shafts are located. The total flow through the two turbines is up to 65 m³ / s, the two generators have an installed capacity of 1.3  MW and produce an average of 7.8 GWh / year, which corresponds to an average capacity of 0.89 MW.

Pfortmühle hydropower plant

The Pfortmühle hydropower plant on the banks of the Weser at the lower weir has been in existence with a turbine since 1912. A Kaplan S bulb turbine with a generator has been operating there since 1986. In this design, the suction pipe is curved in an S-shape and the shaft from the turbine hits the generator straight out. The advantage is that the hydropower plant can be operated at low heights of 3.30 m down to 0.90 m. The flow rate is up to 35 m³ / s with an installed power of 650 kW. This hydropower plant produces an average of 3.9 million kWh / year, which corresponds to an average output of 445 kW.

In 2001/2002 a meandering fish passage with 17 basins, each two meters in diameter, connected by vertical slits, was built between Unterem Wehr and Pfortmühle for 680,000 euros . The fish pass allows fish willing to migrate to ascent (and, to a limited extent, descent) from the underwater to the upper water with a height difference of up to 3.4 m. The flow rate at low water is around 0.3 m³ / s and increases to up to 1.2 m³ / s when the water level in the Weser is higher.
