The Drakenburg barrage is a barrage on the Weser in Drakenburg near the Lower Saxony city of Nienburg / Weser . It consists of a weir , an integrated small Prahm lock and a hydroelectric power station . The Drakenburg lock for shipping on the Weser is located in a lock channel that shortens several river loops .

history

The first plans for the canalization of the Central Weser were made in the 19th century. The first work began in 1933 with the concreting of the bottom of the Drakenburg lock and the shell construction of the first weir pillar of the barrage. However, these were damaged by the effects of the war and had to be rebuilt as part of the new construction program in the 1950s.

Weir

The weir in Drakenburg was built from 1953 to 1956 in order to keep the water level as constant as possible and to make the waterway passable for large ships. It consists of two 40 m wide fields, the storage height is 5.20 m. The weir is operated by the Verden Waterways and Shipping Office , outskirts of Nienburg.

In 2012 and 2013, the two steel fish- bellied flaps in the weir fields were replaced, which are placed on the actual dam and used for fine-tuning the water level of the Weser. This was necessary because the stability of the bridge over the county road between Balge and Drakenburg was at risk.

Prahmschleuse

A small sluice is integrated between the weir and the hydroelectric power station, which is only used by the water and shipping authorities. The usable length is 33 m, the usable width 6.60 m.

Hydroelectric power plant

At the same time as the weir, a run-of-river power plant was built, which has been in operation since 1955. The hydropower plant was originally operated by the PreußenElektra company, which later became part of the EON group. Through an exchange of shares with the Norwegian energy company Statkraft , the latter has been the owner and operator of the power plant since January 1, 2009. The power plant with its three Kaplan turbines has a capacity of 5.0 MW and delivers an average of 28 GWh of electricity per year, which corresponds to an average output of 3.2 MW. The power plant in Drakenburg is monitored from a central control room, which is located in the Erzhausen pumped storage plant .
