The Staffel is a 1532 meter high mountain in the Bavarian Prealps , the valley and the village of Jachenau on the south side towers about 800 m. During the Würm Ice Age it was a so-called nunatak , the peak of which protruded about 100 m from the ice flow.

The flanks of the pyramid-shaped mountain are forested up to the summit region. Only on the south side of the alpine huts are there pronounced light willows. The large bare areas on the north flank that arose as a result of storms Vivian and Wiebke in February 1990 were initially enlarged by bark beetle infestation ; in the meantime, however, planting and natural regeneration have improved the forestry situation. Geologically, the season consists of limestone on the north side and main dolomite on the south side , with the border running south of the summit from west to east.

Because of its isolated location, the Staffel offers an excellent view of the Karwendel and Wetterstein as well as an impressive view of the Jachenau. The mountain is considered to be an easy and popular excursion summit - also suitable for families. On the south side below the summit are the two unmanaged alpine huts of the Staffelalm at approx. 1400 m.
