The Stahl House (also Case Study House No. 22 ), named after the client , is a modern building in the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles .

Pierre Koenig designed the house for the former American football player CH "Buck" Stahl in 1959. The client, who bought the property in 1954, had worked on models for his house that included large-scale glazing before meeting Koenig. Like the Bailey House (No. 21) built in the previous year, the house took part in the Arts & Architecture magazine's Case Study Houses program for experimental residential architecture, the June 1960 issue of which presented the building to the public. Construction work began in 1959 after Buck Stahl had been preparing the property with terraces for construction over several years. After nine months, construction work was finished in June 1960. With the house, Koenig tried to show that industrial materials such as steel are suitable for residential construction.

Thanks to numerous magazine and newspaper articles as well as reports in specialist magazines and books, the building gained worldwide fame and is considered an icon of modern architecture in California. In addition, photographs by Julius Shulman caused a stir. The Stahl House also served as a production site for film and photo recordings. The building, which is privately owned by the client's family, has won several awards and has been included in lists of important architecture ("America's Favorite Architecture" - AIA 2007, "The best houses of all time in LA" - Los Angeles Times 2008).

The L-shaped structure is erected on a slope that was previously considered unbuildable. The southern wing of the building is completely glazed from the floor to the steel roof and offers a view of the city from all rooms. The original simple glazing broke easily and was later replaced with shatterproof glass. The balcony without handrail running around the living room is also a later change in the design.

On July 24, 2013, Stahl House was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a monument.

media

The Stahl House has been featured in several films and TV series, including:

The future of the building and its eventual destruction after a fictional disappearance of mankind is shown in episode 5 of the 2nd season of the docu-fiction series Future Without People (“Collapse Risk”, USA 2010).
