The Stahlgruber GmbH , headquartered in the Bavarian Poing is a provider of car accessories and workshop equipment; the company has been a subsidiary of the US LKQ group since 2018.

history

In 1923 the brothers Otto and Willy Gruber founded the Gruber & Co company in Munich , which traded in screws and small metal parts. Soon they started selling compressors and lifting platforms . Because the vernacular spoke of Stahl Gruber , this was adopted as the company name. In the course of industrialization and advancing motorization, the company developed into a leading specialist wholesaler for car accessories, tools and workshop equipment.

In 1935 the KG was founded under Otto Gruber & Co. with headquarters in Munich. From 1937 tube patches were produced for the repair of tires, from 1938 also sleeves and tire plasters. Shortly after the end of the war, a cold vulcanizing material was developed that made temperature-resistant hose repair possible for the first time. The new product was named "Tip Top". In the post-war period, a production facility was built in Fürstenzell (Passau). In 1950 the company opened foreign agencies in Italy and Japan. The plant in Poing was opened in 1954. In 1960 another production facility was added in Desdorf near Cologne. From 1990 the company expanded into the new federal states and founded the processing plants Borna , Schwarze Pump , Neuruppin and Wittenberg. In 1997, the Stahlgruber Center was built in Munich , which is now a shopping center.

In 2002 the company moved its headquarters from Munich to Poing. In 2007, the Rema Tip Top and trading divisions became legally independent as Stahlgruber GmbH . In 2008 the merger to Stahlgruber Otto Gruber AG took place, in 2009 the acquisition of Dunlop Belting (Pty.) Ltd. in South Africa. In 2010, manufacturing and development departments were merged into the independent Alfa Development GmbH . The takeover of Stahlgruber GmbH by the US American LKQ Corporation was announced in December 2017 and completed in May 2018.

In 1969 the brothers Otto and Willy Gruber set up the Stahlgruber Foundation through a will . The City of Munich received equity of 23 million DM under the agreement that this would remain with the company as a non-cancellable loan . The city of Munich receives the interest, the money must be used for training and promoting the next generation in the automotive and vulcanizing trade, in accordance with the purpose of the foundation. The Stahlgruber Foundation is one of the largest foundations in the city of Munich.

In 2003 the Stahlgruber-Gesellschafter-Stiftung was established by the company's shareholders. It is a non-profit public foundation under civil law based in Poing. The foundation is audited by the German Rubber Industry Association and offers, among other things, additional training to become a master vulcanizer. Are financed u. a. Training, subject-specific courses and lectures, company tours and competitions.
