Stanley Maurice "Stan" Wicks (born July 11, 1928 in Reading , † February 20, 1983 in Henley-on-Thames ) was an English football player . The middle runner won the English championship in 1955 with Chelsea .

Athletic career

As a professional footballer from 1948, Wicks was initially a constant in the defensive row of the local third division FC Reading , before he moved two leagues higher to Chelsea in January 1954 after 170 league appearances for the "Royals" . There he had to wait a few months for his debut, but after his debut on November 6, 1954 at Sunderland AFC (3: 3), he moved into the regular formation - at the expense of the six and a half years older competitor Ron Greenwood . Wicks completed a total of 21 league games in Chelsea's 1954/55 championship season and in the 4-2 away win in the derby against Tottenham on April 2, 1955, he scored his first and only goal for the "Blues". Chelsea coach Ted Drake later described Wicks as his best transfer alongside Frank Blunstone .

The reliable center runner was considered a candidate for the English national team, but late after he had seriously injured his knee ligaments 17 months after the championship, he had to end his active career at the age of 28, which he won with an international match in 1952 for England B-Elf had to be content against France.

Wicks later worked under his ex-captain, Roy Bentley , when he was Reading FC's coach before moving on to the family carpet business. He died early in February 1983 as a result of cancer.
