Stand by Your Man is a country song by Tammy Wynette and Billy Sherrill , sung by Tammy Wynette and released as a single in the United States in September 1968 . It was Wynette's most successful release and was covered many times.

The song was written in just about 15 minutes at Epic Studios , based on an idea from Wynette's producer Billy Sherrill :

“'Stand by Your Man' is just another way of saying 'I love you — without reservations. (...) I spent 15 minutes writing ['Stand by Your Man'], and a lifetime defending it. "

The song reached number one on the US country charts in late 1968 and stayed there for three weeks. The song reached number 19 in the US pop charts . When the piece was released in Great Britain in 1975 , it reached number 1. There was also a very successful album of the same name in 1968.

In 1969 the song won the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance . In 2010 the song was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as a 2010 supplement that includes recordings that are "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". In 2001 the song was ranked 48th on the Song of the Century list by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) .

controversy

The song was criticized by the women's movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s for saying that a woman should stay with her husband at all costs.

Further use

  • At the beginning of the film Five Easy Pieces , the song is used to characterize the main characters.
  • In the 1980 film Blues Brothers , the band performed the song in a slightly ironic version.
  • Wynette's version has been used as the theme song for the comedy television series Dittsche since 2004 .
