Stanisław Brzozowski (pantomime)

Stanisław Brzozowski (also Stanislaw or Staszek Brosowski ; * 1938 ) is a Polish pantomime .

Life

In Poland, Brzozowski started his career in the 1950s as a student in the ensemble of Henryk Tomaszewski , the founder and director of the Wrocławski Teatr Pantomimy , where he became a soloist.

In the late 1960s, Brzozowski did not return to Poland after touring Western Europe and settled in Sweden. There he taught since 1970 at the State Dance School Stockholm (danshögskolan) and since the beginning of 1993 at the State Drama School (teaterhögskolan) a three-year university education that produces actors with a focus on pantomime.

Because Brzozowski decreed from the start that a new entrance exam would only take place after completing a class, studying at Stockholms mimlinje is as intensive as it is exclusive, and since its introduction has only produced around 90 state-certified actor mimes.

effect

The inclusion of Brzozowski's pantomime faculty in the drama school was logical in so far as Brzozowski has always viewed pantomime, which he prefers to call movement theater, not as a side branch of dance, but as an integral part of the expressive vocabulary of actors. The body language taught by Brzozowski has less to do with the stereo- and archetype-based representations of the circus and fairground mimes or Marcel Marceau's . Rather, he teaches a grammar of the body that analyzes and practices the interaction of every part of the musculoskeletal system in interaction with the environment. In the tradition of Henryk Tomaszewski, he is thus much closer to the old master of French pantomime, Étienne Decroux , than his famous student Marceau. In contrast to Decroux, however, Brzozowski does not use too much abstraction in the representation.

Since his students are also taught classical acting and voice training in addition to pantomime, dance and acrobatics , the result on stage is ultimately much more realistic, silent play than dance. It is therefore only logical that his students also include many respected Scandinavian actors such as Stellan Skarsgård or Mats Bergman . In addition, Brzozowski is frequently involved in productions at the Swedish State Theater Dramaten in Stockholm, as well as giving his pupils the opportunity to do their first internships in pieces at the State Theater.
