Stanley Engerman

Stanley Lewis Engerman (born March 14, 1936 ) is an American economist , economic historian and university lecturer . He worked, among others, with the later Nobel Prize winner Robert Fogel .

Scientific successes

Engermann was president of the "Social Science History Association" and the "Economic History Association". Today he is Professor of Economics and History at the University of Rochester , where he teaches economic history and the economics of sports and entertainment. He is currently teaching the same subjects as a visiting professor at Harvard University . Engermann became known through the work " Time on the Cross: The Economics of American Negro Slavery ", which was created in collaboration with the later Nobel Prize winner Robert Fogel , which was later awarded the prestigious "Bancroft Prize" for American history by Columbia University . In this work, Fogel and Engermann take a critical look at the economic aspects of former slavery in America. As an author or co-author, Engermann has written 12 scientific studies the length of a book and published over 100 articles in his department. His works have not yet been translated into German. In 1985 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
