Stapelia similis is a species of plant from the subfamily of the asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae).

features

The species forms perennial, stem succulents , about 12 apically slightly tapering shoots, which have a basal diameter of 1 to 1.5 cm. The surface of the shoots is gray-green, sometimes a little purple. The cross-section of the shoots is roughly square with truncated corners. The leaflets are very small, triangular and formed as white perennial thorns. The flower sits at the end of a splayed or spread flat on the ground, up to 8 cm long peduncle . There are usually several flower stalks with buds of different stages formed at the same time. They open up gradually. The corolla measures 1.5 to 2.2 cm in diameter. It is yellow-brown, dark red-brown to almost black. The shape varies slightly from flat to slightly bell-shaped. In the center, the flowers are cup-shaped or tubular deepened with a marginal annulus. The crown lobes are relatively short and obtuse triangular. They are covered with fine hairs on the outside and bare on the inside. There are clear transverse bulges on the inside. The corona is brown to black with rectangular interstaminal corolla lobes. The elongated or oval staminal corolla lobes, however, taper to a point and are about as long as the stamens . The pollinia have an orange-red, less often brown color.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

distribution

The species occurs in the arid regions of the northern Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa and in Namibia . It is now also available in many specialist nurseries.

Synonyms

The species was first described by Nicholas Edward Brown in 1911. His type specimen came from Namibia. Later the species was also described under the names Stapelia portae-taurinae Dinter & A. Berger , Stapelia noachabibensis C. A. Lückhoff and Stapelia juttae Dinter , which are therefore more recent synonyms.
