The Hamburg software company Star Division was founded in 1985 by 16-year-old Marco Börries in Lüneburg . After a neighbor reported to the public order office about running a business in a residential area, the company moved to Hamburg. Star Division was best known for its StarOffice office suite . This software has been sold over 25 million times worldwide.

In 1998, Börries released StarOffice for private use free of charge. Star Division was bought on August 5, 1999 by the software and hardware manufacturer Sun Microsystems for a high double-digit million amount (US dollars). As a result, Sun made the software available as StarOffice 5.1a for the first time free of charge for commercial use.

The StarOffice program has since been further developed by Sun Microsystems and the OpenOffice.org project. Sun Microsystems has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Oracle Corporation since January 27, 2010 .
