Rebel Assault [ ˈɹɛbələˌsɔːlt ] is a shoot 'em up computer game from LucasArts . The game, the plot of which is based on the Star Wars films, was released in 1993 and was one of the first computer games to be exclusively available on CD-ROM . It was released for DOS , Mac OS , Sega Mega-CD and 3DO .
description
The game essentially consists of an alternate narration of the events from Star Wars (episode 4). The player slips into the role of a young pilot ("Rookie 1") of the rebel fleet and has to complete various missions, mostly flying, up to and including the destruction of the Death Star known from the Star Wars films. The battle for the ice planet Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back is also included.
Most of the time, the player has a rather restricted freedom of movement (so-called rail shooter ), as these resemble “finished” film sequences, but in some places there are options between alternative paths.
publication
Rebel Assault was one of the first games to be released exclusively on CD-ROM. The high storage capacity of the CD-ROM enabled the developers to use real film sequences for the staging. In addition, rendered cutscenes were shown, which was by no means common at the time. The game's great popularity also resulted in increasing sales of CD-ROM drives .
In the version for Sega-CD, a mission (Mission 7: Imperial Probe Droids) has been removed compared to the DOS version.
reception
The game received mostly good reviews in computer game magazines:
- PC wild card : 87%
- PC Games : 91%
- PC player : 91%
- Power Play : 87% (DOS) / 85% (Mac)
Rebel Assault II - The Hidden Empire
In 1995 the sequel to the game, Rebel Assault II - The Hidden Empire, was released . For Rebel Assault II , cutscenes with actors were shot. As in Rebel Assault , rendered cutscenes were made that were of significantly better quality.
Appeared Rebel Assault II for IBM PC , Windows , Mac and Playstation .
In contrast to Rebel Assault , Rebel Assault II has its own story written that does not follow the storyline of Star Wars - A New Hope . The aim is to destroy an imperial factory that is building a novel TIE fighter that can camouflage itself.
In the period up to the appearance of Rebel Assault II - The Hidden Empire rumors surfaced in the trade press that LucasArts was working on a game called Imperial Assault , in which the player should take on the role of the imperial opposite side. However, if there were any plans for it, this game was never realized.
