Star Wars: TIE Fighter is a space combat simulation released by LucasArts in 1994 . The game is the sequel to the space simulation Star Wars: X-Wing from 1993 .
Like X-Wing, TIE Fighter simulates space battles between star fighters in the Star Wars universe. This time, however, the player changes sides: Instead of the rebellion, the player flies the various space fighters of the Galactic Empire (starting with the eponymous TIE Fighter ) in several battles against the alliance of rebels , pirates and even renegade imperial naval associations.
design
TIE Fighter is fundamentally based in technology and design on the previous game X-Wing . For the first time, Gouraud shading was used in the simulator sequences , which made the spaceships appear more realistic than in the predecessor.
TIE Fighter as the previous X-Wing developed by Lawrence Holland and Edward Kilham in a leading position, which later under the label Totally Games , among others, the followers of Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance developed.
The game principle was essentially retained: As an imperial pilot, the player flies several missions combined into battles. The process is always the same: the flight officer first gives instructions, then the mission is flown and, if it is successfully completed, the instruction for the next mission follows. If an entire battle is successfully concluded, a small film sequence is shown showing the final events. The player is rewarded with a medal at the end of a battle.
New to TIE Fighter is a kind of secondary briefing by a member of the Emperor's secret society , in which you receive additional bonus goals for the primary and secondary mission goals of the flight officer and are additionally rewarded if they are successful.
The sequence of the individual missions is much more varied and dynamic compared to X-Wing . The occurrence of a certain event can completely change the basic objective of the mission without the player being informed beforehand.
Content
In terms of content, TIE Fighter is based on the Star Wars films episodes IV to VI as well as on the previous game X-Wing . The plot takes place in the period between Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi Knights , however, apart from a few events, it differs from the plot known from the films.
In TIE Fighter , the empire is portrayed less as the brutal and unscrupulous military force known from the movies, but rather as an elitist and powerful armed force with heroic goals for peace and order in the galaxy.
In order to make the gameplay more varied, new space vehicles appear that did not appear in the films or in the previous game. The "fleet" of available space fighters, transporters and ships has once again been extensively expanded compared to its predecessor. For the first time, fixed space stations and landing platforms also play a central role.
The player flies in various missions the TIE fighters (Engl. "TIE Fighter"), TIE Bomber , TIE interceptors ( "TIE Interceptor"), TIE fighters Mk2 ( "TIE Advanced") and the Assault Gunboat ( "Assault Gunboat"). The extensions also include the TIE fighter-bomber (“TIE Defender”) and the rocket boat (“Missile Boat”).
On the imperial side, numerous medium and large spaceships can also be seen, such as the Lambda ferry known from the films (“Lambda Class / Tyderian Shuttle”), the Corellian Transporter (“Corellian Transport”), the Corellian Corvette (“Corellian Corvette "), which Nebulon-B frigate (" Nebulon-B frigate ") and various star destroyer (" star destroyer "). The arsenal is supplemented with a large number of armed combat ships and a myriad of transport ships and containers.
The alliance of the rebels leads the well-known X-wing , Y-wing , A-wing , B-wing (“X-wing” etc.) and the new Z-95 headhunter (English “Z-95 headhunter”, a kind Predecessor of the X-wing) into the field, as well as different variants of the Mon Calamari cruiser . Also on the rebellious side, numerous medium-sized and large ships are used, which the empire also uses.
Every now and then the empire also has to do with pirates and neutral groups, who in turn use a wide variety of space fighters, transporters and combat ships.
action
As with the predecessor X-Wing, the game consists of battles that contain several individual missions that, building on one another, must be flown one after the other and pursue a specific end goal. One mission has to be completed successfully in order to fly the next one. It is not possible to skip individual missions. The order of the battles is not always fixed. Therefore, the current battle can be changed at any time and continued to be played later. The later battles partly build on each other in their plot, so the order is restricted here.
- Battle 1: The aftermath of Hoth (English "Aftermath of Hoth")
- After the Battle of Hoth, the rebels continue to be driven to the edge of the galaxy. The commander-in-chief of the campaign, Admiral Harkov, uses the contact with the rebels to inform them of his readiness to overflow.
- Battle 2: Sepan Civil War ("The Sepan Civil War")
- The Imperial fleet, under the command of Admiral Harkov, ends the conflict between the Ripoblus and the Dimok. At the end of the campaign, the first new TIE fighters Mk2 are introduced.
- Battle 3: The Border Battle ("Battle on the Frontier")
- Under the command of Admiral Thrawn, the Empire establishes a new base in the Pakuuni system, which is ruled by pirates (and of course rebels).
- Battle 4: The Mylok IV Conflict ("Conflict at Mylok IV")
- Admiral Zaarin is driving the final development of the TIE Mk2. The possessions leaning towards the empire provide a new hyperdrive. Their allies, the Nharwaak, who sympathize with the rebellion, try to prevent this. Ultimately, the Nharwaak can be prevented from delivering the hyperdrive to the rebels.
- Battle 5: Battle for Honor ("Battle for Honor")
- Back at Admiral Harkov's fleet, events roll over: The fleet is about to convert to the rebellion. In five missions, the overflow is prevented, Harkov's fleet is wiped out and the treacherous admiral himself captured and personally "interrogated" by Darth Vader.
- Battle 6: Arms Race
- The development of the newest space fighter, the TIE fighter-bomber, is advancing. Several attempts by the rebels to hinder completion are successfully foiled. With the tractor beam, a new type of defensive weapon is introduced.
- Battle 7: Treason at Ottega ("Treachery at Ottega")
- Convinced of his technological superiority, Admiral Zaarin starts a coup against the emperor. Admiral Thrawn is sending several squadrons of TIE Mk2 to counter this threat. Zaarin's attempted coup can be prevented at the last moment.
Extensions
Defender of the Empire
In 1994, the Defender of the Empire expansion was released. In addition to the playable space fighters already known from the main program, there is also the imperial rocket boat (“Missile Boat”), for which training courses and missions have also been integrated.
Defender of the Empire includes the following battles:
- Battle 8: Sabotage / Strategic Victory ("Strategic Warfare")
- The traitor Zaarin continues his attacks on the Empire. But the rebels also appear on the scene and carry a new weapon with them: the Mag Pulse torpedo. This can be captured from the empire. However, this does not prevent Zaarin from also destroying the last production facility of the TIE Mk2.
- Battle 9: TIE fighter-bomber / T / J technology ("TIE Defender Technology")
- What Zaarin has achieved with the TIE Mk2, he is now trying to repeat with the TIE fighter-bomber. However, its attacks can be foiled and TIE fighter-bomber technology brought to safety.
- Battle 10: New Threats
- A rumor is confirmed: TIE fighter-bomber technology has fallen into the hands of pirates. In order to thwart further steps, the new rocket boat developed by Admiral Thrawn is sent out. Thanks to this new fighter, the pirates' production facility can be quickly destroyed before they are able to deliver the TIE fighter-bomber to the rebels.
Enemies of the Empire
LucasArts originally planned to release a second expansion after Defender of the Empire . Enemies of the Empire should be available as a separate second expansion , similar to the B-Wing expansion for X-Wing. Enemies of the Empire was never released individually, but was integrated into the TIE Fighter CD-ROM edition (see below) as a bonus .
The following battles are included in Enemies of the Empire :
- Battle 11: Hunt for Zaarin
- The new missile boat has proven to be a worthy opponent for Zaarin's TIE fighter-bomber. Now Zaarin is to be finally brought down. In seven missions, Zaarin can be further weakened and an attack on his part can be repulsed. It also prevents Zaarin from appropriating the Vorknkx project , the prototype of a newly developed cloaking device.
- Battle 12: Prelude to Endor ("Prelude to Endor")
- The new Second Death Star is nearing completion. The Emperor plans to finally destroy the rebels at Endor. The Bothans must be prevented from disclosing important classified information to the rebellion.
- Battle 13: The Emperor's Will
- Zaarin reports back. His spies were able to steal data on the missile boat and the Emperor's trap at Endor. A TIE Mk2 squadron can thwart the delivery of this information to the rebels. Meanwhile, Zaarin, for his part, managed to steal the Vorknkx project. Not knowing that the project is a failure, he tries to escape into hyperspace. That will be his undoing.
Versions
As before with X-Wing, LucasArts released a CD-ROM edition of the game after the diskette version of TIE Fighter in 1995 .
This contains the original game TIE Fighter , the expansion Defender of the Empire , which is also available as a diskette version, and the second expansion, Enemies of the Empire , which is exclusively included in the CD-ROM edition.
The CD-ROM version also contained technical and playful improvements.
Technical improvements included rendered film sequences, digital sound and an optional Super VGA resolution of 640 × 480 pixels in the simulator sequences.
On the playful side, there were also improved, interactive and fully sounded briefings. Curiously, in contrast to X-Wing, the voice recordings for the German version were not replayed with German speakers, so that all texts in the game are completely in German, but all meetings with the flight officer and announcements during the missions can be heard in English are.
