Station cruiser

As station cruisers were in the German Navy Imperial and other fleets such Kreuzer referred to in overseas territories or colonies were stationed. This mission was called station service .

Outdated, slow protected cruisers with large coal bunker capacity and (until around 1880) additional sails were mostly selected for this. This should compensate for the lack of coal stations in the operational area and at the same time increase sea ​​endurance .

Station cruisers were also referred to as colonial cruisers or foreign cruisers in other fleets . They weren't always cruisers in the true sense of the word. Often units of the types gunboat , Aviso or auxiliary cruiser were also referred to as station cruisers . Their main task was to combat piracy on the coasts of the station port and to hold down the indigenous population of the colonies. For this purpose, special (marine) infantry units were often on board, which should go ashore if necessary and enforce the will of the colonial power.
