The statue of Tristão Vaz Teixeira is located in the Largo Dom Antonio Jardim de Oliveira square of Machico , Madeira, next to the main church Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição . It was designed as a monument to the discoverer and first captain of Machico Tristão Vaz Teixeira . The statue was cast in bronze by the neo-realistic sculptor Pedro Anjos Teixeira (1908–1997) in 1971 and inaugurated in 1972. In the Museu Anjos Teixeira in Sintra there is a patinated plaster cast measuring 260 × 75 × 75 cm. The original stands on a stone base, signed "Anjos Teixeira 1971".

With João Gonçalves Zarco and Bartolomeu Perestrelo he discovered the island of Porto Santo. On May 11, 1440 he received the capitania from Machico. He married Branca Teixeira and left numerous descendants. He died in Silves in the Algarve in 1480 .
