The statue menhir from Lac de la Raviège was found in 2013 at low tide by a walker in the Barrage de la Raviège reservoir , in the area of La Salvetat-sur-Agout on the border between the departments of Hérault and Tarn in the Haut-Languedoc . The statue menhir was over two meters long, over a meter wide and weighed 1.5 tons, with the engraving facing down.

description

The exceptionally well-preserved statue menhir is located in La Salvetat-sur-Agout, where attempts are being made to reconstruct its history. It was surprising that it is the first male menhir with a mouth. The statue menhirs of the Rouergat group were previously considered to be deities without a mouth. The face is similar to that of the female statue menhir from “Jasse du Terral 2”, who was discovered 40 km away. The sandstone statue menhir from Jouveyrac in Martrin is one of only three so far that has a mouth.

About 40 statue menhirs are known in the Gard and Herault. Less noticeable than the ornate statue menhirs of Rouergue, they are dated to the Neolithic and Copper Ages. A statue menhir found on the Pic du Montalet near Lacaune in Tarn could be traced back to 2700 BC based on the charcoal in the base. To be dated. The Muséum d'histoire naturelle in Nîmes presents the most beautiful pieces.

The statue menhirs de la Gruasse 1 - 3 are nearby.
