Stavros Savidis ( Greek Σταύρος Σαββίδης , born September 11, 1944 in Athens ) is a Greek civil engineer for geotechnics and was a professor at the TU Berlin .

life and work

Savidis, the son of a lawyer, studied after high school in 1962 at the German School in Athens and 1965 civil engineering at NTU Athens (thesis Static and dynamic calculation of a conical shell ) and then at the Technical University Berlin, where he was first a DAAD scholarship at the Institute for hydraulic engineering and from 1968 assistant to Hans Lorenz at the Institute for Foundation Engineering and Soil Mechanics. In 1971 he received his doctorate under Lorenz ( The effect of the quarter space on the stationary forced vibrations of a strip foundation ) and was then an assistant. In 1977 he completed his habilitation with Hans Lorenz and Hanno Müller-Kirchenbauer in Berlin and from 1978 was a private lecturer at the TU Berlin, where he was professor (C2) from 1979. From 1978 he was professor for foundation engineering and soil mechanics at the newly founded Democritus University of Thrace in Xanthi , where he established the faculty for foundation engineering and soil mechanics and was rector from 1983 to 1987. From 1984 to 1987 he was vice-president of the state institute for earthquake-proof construction (engineering seismology and aseismic constructions) in Thessaloniki (ITSAK). In 1987 he succeeded Müller-Kirchenbauer (whom he had already represented at the TU Berlin in 1982) as a full professor of foundation engineering and soil dynamics at the TU Berlin. 1995 to 1997 (and 1999 to 2001 and 2003 to 2005) he was Vice Dean for Civil Engineering and Applied Geosciences and Dean from 1997 to 1999 and 2001 to 2003. In Berlin he also works as a consulting engineer for geotechnical engineering and (since 1990) partner in the engineering office GuD Geotechnik and Dynamic Consult in Berlin.

Savidis is (like his predecessor in Berlin Hans Lorenz ) particularly known as an expert in soil dynamics and dynamic subsoil-structure interaction, especially with regard to earthquake-proof construction. He has been chairman of the subsoil dynamics working group of the DGGT since 1992 (in which he has been a member since 1981) and was chairman of the German Society for Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics (DGEB) from 1996 to 2004. He was involved in the revision of DIN standard 4194 from 2005 for buildings in German earthquake regions. From 1989 to 1994 he organized international conferences for earthquake-proof construction (ERCAD) in Berlin.

In addition, he deals with various questions of special civil engineering, such as those that arise with deep excavation pits in Berlin, and since the 1970s with numerical modeling in geotechnical engineering (he has been a member of the numerics working group in foundation engineering of the DGGT since 1974 ).

He has been married to Georgia Alexandropoulou since 1993 and has one daughter.
