Stavros Xarchakos

Stavros Xarchakos ( Greek Σταύρος Ξαρχάκος - mostly transcribed Stavros Xarhakos ; born March 14, 1939 in Athens ) is a Greek composer, conductor and politician.

Along with Manos Hadjidakis and Mikis Theodorakis , he is considered one of the most important Greek composers. He studied music in Athens, Paris and New York. At the beginning of his career he stood out mainly through his compositions for theater and film. He later turned his interest to classical music. Xarchakos has been the conductor of the State Orchestra of Greek Music (KOEM) since 1995. With his songs for the film Rembetiko by Kostas Ferris , composed in the rembetiko style , he triggered a renaissance of this musical genre in Greece.

From 2000 to 2004 he was a member of the New Democracy in the European Parliament .
