Ste-Marie-Madeleine (Penmarch)
Ste-Marie-Madeleine ( St. Maria Magdalena ) is a Roman Catholic chapel in La Madeleine, a district of Penmarch in Brittany . The chapel has been classified as a monument historique since 1956 .
history
The western parts of the Ste-Marie-Madeleine chapel date back to the 12th century and were consecrated to St. Stephen, the arch-martyr . The nave is dated to 1416. At the beginning of the 16th century there was an expansion to the east in the Flamboyant Gothic style and the patronage was changed to St. Mary Magdalene . At that time, the chapel was the house of worship for a leprosy . Construction evidence suggests that the chapel was divided into two parts to isolate the priests from the lepers.
A bell gable typical of the region is located above the west wall of the chapel. A large late-Gothic tracery window adorns the end of the choir .
