History and parish structure

The French-speaking administrative district of Bernese Jura includes the following municipalities: Orvin , Péry-La Heutte , Romont BE and Sauge, belonging to the Roman Catholic parish of Biel and the surrounding area . The pastoral area Biel / Bienne-La Neuveville is part of the diocese region that includes the canton Jura together with the Bernese Jura and the French-speaking Roman Catholic part of the city of Biel. The French-speaking part of the diocese of Basel is called Jura pastoral / Unités pastorales . At the end of the nineteenth century, the situation around the Marienkirche in Biel that had arisen as a result of the Kulturkampf had been resolved. Until then, the Catholics from the Jura region around Péry had to walk either to the Solothurn region over the mountain to Grenchen or to Gänsbrunnen . After Sunday mass in Biel's Marienkirche was possible again, the descent down to Biel was still too difficult. That is why the operators of the “Hôtel de la Truite” made their property available to Ms. Peck and Mr. Hofer to build a church. The building was approved by the mother parish in Biel, you could build. As a precaution, in order to avoid a possible confiscation of the church property, the church, built in 1904, remained in the possession of the Consortium Fides, the Roman Catholic religious association in Biel, until 1962. The village community (communaute-des-Villages) was founded in 1981. Normally there is a monthly service in the Marienkirche.

Building description

South side with sacristy and tower

The chapel dedicated to the Assumption of Mary was built in 1904 by the Catholic parish of Bienne to save Catholics from descending to Biel. It stands on the forefront of the hill of the abandoned Châtillon Castle , the former seat of the Lords of Péry. In 1909 the bell tower overhanging the chapel received its only bell, named Katarina . In 1932 the church was expanded, in 1941 the painting and decorations were renovated and in 1963 the architect Jeanne Bueche rebuilt it. The saltpeter efflorescence on the natural stone masonry could be remedied during the renovation in 1979. The nave is in a south-west-north-east orientation and has a saddle roof covered with dark gray fiber cement slate . The southern gable is surmounted by a stone cross. A choir apse is built on the north gable and to the east the octagonal bell tower on a square base with the separate sacristy. The entrance on the south facade is covered by a porch that rests on Jurassic limestone columns. The forecourt can be reached via a footpath from Dorfstrasse. A parish hall at the foot of the hill complements the parish buildings. The church is usually locked and can be visited by appointment.

Furnishing

In the nave, the Freiburg artist Yoki (1922–2012) created six stained glass windows with the collaboration of the Freiburg glass artist Michel Eltschinger (* 1939), which are mentioned in various literature. The five abstract glass paintings with the symbolism of the life of Jesus and Mary from 2.10 m by 85 cm, as well as a round window of the Assumption with a diameter of 1.20 m were inaugurated in 1990. The chapel is also equipped with a wood-carved Stations of the Cross and a statue of the Madonna.
