features
Males of Steatocranus gibbiceps reach a length of up to 12 cm, while females remain slightly smaller at 10 cm. The species is very similar to the humpback cichlid ( Steatocranus casuarius ) known from aquaristics , but is slimmer and stays smaller ( S. casuarius : ♂ max. 15 cm, ♀ max. 12 cm), has different teeth and a shorter intestine. Steatocranus gibbiceps is a gastropod eater and has an intestine the length of which is 0.75 to 0.8% of the body length, while the humpback cichlid as an algae eater has an intestine that is 1.5 to 3 times as long as the body. The scales of S. gibbiceps are light gray and have a dark edge, while it is exactly the other way around in the humpback cichlid. In Steatocranus gibbiceps , too , the males develop a forehead hump, which becomes larger with increasing age. The chest of S. gibbiceps is cream-colored, the gill membranes are blackish brown.
