Stefan Grasse

Stefan Grasse (* 1962 in Munich ) is a German concert guitarist, composer and music producer.

Life

Stefan Grasse lived in Munich until 1984, where he received classical guitar lessons from Ales Andryszak and Leonard Anatol Regnier. At the same time he studied jazz guitar from 1979 to 1982 with Peter O'Mara at the Jazz School Munich GmbH under the direction of Joe Haider , where he became the youngest graduate. After moving to Nuremberg, he studied classical guitar first with Zdenka Schulz (1984–1986) and finally with Kurt Hiesl (1986–1990) at the Meistersinger Conservatory in Nuremberg. In 1989 and 1990 he attended the summer courses for classical guitar with Pepe Romero at the International Summer Academy Mozarteum Salzburg . He completed his studies with the Certificate of Postgraduate Studies from 1990 to 1991 with Phillip Thorne at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.

During his studies, Stefan Grasse received scholarships from Bayerischer Rundfunk, the "Guitar Challenge Prize 1991" from the Royal Scottish Academy and the "Scottish Society of Composers' Award 1991". During this time, a close collaboration developed with the Scottish composers Thomas Brendan Wilson, John Maxwell Geddes and Edward McGuire, which led to numerous world premieres. For his concert activities he was awarded the Culture Prize of the City of Nuremberg (Nuremberg Scholarship 1996), the Culture Prize 2004 of the Kulturforum Franken and a Culture Prize 2018 of the District of Middle Franconia.

Stefan Grasse is the artistic director and organizer of the "Nuremberg Guitar Nights", which has been held annually since 1995. In 1999 he founded the music label Xolo Music, which has since released almost 50 CDs. In 2004 he initiated the association for the promotion of the guitar and related musical instruments eV "Saitenwirbel". From 2010 to 2012 he moderated the monthly magazine "GuitarJam", which he founded, on Radio Z 95.8 MHz Nuremberg . As a composer, he mainly works for his own trio or quartet, but has also taken on compositions for the tent theater Comoedia Mundi , Rote Bühne Nürnberg and baeumler film + tv.

Until 2017 Grasse gave over 2000 concerts in Europe, Turkey, Argentina, the USA, China and Australia and released 16 CD productions under his own name. From 2006 to 2015 Grasse was a lecturer for guitar at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. He gave master classes and lectures a. a. at James Cook University Australia, the University of Central Oklahoma USA, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama Glasgow and at the Nordhorn International Guitar Festival.

Grasse brought mostly commissioned works initiated by him for the first and world premieres. a. by composers Janet Beat, Volker Blumenthaler , Dieter Buwen , John Maxwell Geddes, Heinrich Hartl , Nicky Hind, Stefan Hippe , Adriana Hölszky , Edward McGuire, Vivienne Olive , Steve Reich and Thomas Brendan Wilson.
