Stefan Targets (born February 4, 1957 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German doctor for allergic and respiratory diseases and head of the allergology , pulmonology and cystic fibrosis department of the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the Frankfurt University Hospital .

Career

After graduating from high school in Frankfurt am Main, he studied from 1975 to 1983 at the JW v. Goethe University in Frankfurt Medicine. From 1985 to 1990 he was at the children's clinic of JW v. Goethe University and during this time graduated in 1989 as a specialist in pediatric and adolescent medicine , followed in 1991 by specializing in allergology. From 1990 to 1991 a research stay followed in the department for applied immunology at SC Meuer at the DKFZ Heidelberg, from where he changed to the position of senior physician in pediatric allergology and pulmonology, which he held until 1998. In 1994 he published his habilitation thesis on the subject of T-cell regulation in patients with general variable immunodeficiency (CVID) . In 1996 he completed the advanced training course in pediatric pulmonology certified by the Medical Association. From 1998 to 2002 he was Professor of Pediatrics at the Chair of Pediatric Allergology and Pneumology at the University of Bonn . From there he moved to the position of professor for pediatric allergology, pneumology and cystic fibrosis at the University of Frankfurt.

Research focus

Zielen's research focus is on the molecular and cellular processes involved in the pathogenesis of allergic and chronic lung diseases (including bronchial asthma , allergies, cystic fibrosis, ataxia teleangiectasia ). His goal is to better understand complex processes in chronic inflammatory processes in the lungs in order to develop new therapeutic options.

Scientific achievement

Ziel has published around 180 peer-reviewed papers at Pubmed and is an expert on asthma, rare lung diseases and allergic diseases. Since 1990 he has been involved in clinical studies as a leader (LKP) or investigator (PI).

In the 2000s, six members of his working group completed their habilitation.

Targets has received several awards for his research:

  • Messer Prize from JW Goethe University CD40 / CD40 Ligand Regulation in Primary Immunodeficiencies
  • Main prize of the German Society for Heredo Ataxia for the work “Pathogenesis, diagnostics, clinic and therapeutic aspects of ataxia teleangiectatica
  • Honorary Member of the Hungarian Respiratory Society 

Aiming is a regular keynote speaker at specialist conferences:

  • 2002 President of the German Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases (DGPI) in Wiesbaden
  • 2006 President of the Society for Pediatric Pneumology (GPP) in Frankfurt
  • 2009 Secretary of the German Society for Child and Adolescent Medicine eV in Mannheim
