Stefania Woytowicz (born October 8, 1922 in Orynyn , † September 1, 2005 in Warsaw ) was a Polish singer ( soprano ).

Life

Woytowicz grew up in Brest-Litowsk and lived in Warsaw from 1943. In 1945 she began studying Romance languages ​​and musicology at the University of Cracow and at the same time took singing lessons from Stanisława Zawadzka . In 1949 she made her debut as a singer, in 1950 she won a singing competition in Poznan, in 1951 the Bach Competition in Leipzig and in 1954 the singing competition at the Prague Spring .

After a concert tour through Austria, Russia and China in 1955, she made international appearances in London and Paris, Stockholm and Moscow, at the music festival in Edinburgh, in the Netherlands and Germany. In 1960 she went on a concert tour through the USA, at the Salzburg Festival in 1965 she sang a solo part in a symphony by Gustav Mahler and in 1970 the soprano part in Krzysztof Penderecki's St. Luke Passion. Works by contemporary composers took up a significant part of her repertoire, including Alban Berg's songs based on postcard texts or the Symphony of Lamentations by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki , which was premiered in 1977 with the Symphony Orchestra of Südwestfunk Baden-Baden under the direction of Ernest Bour and was released on record . Although she never appeared on the opera stage, she still participated in several opera productions for television and sang opera music on several recordings.
