Stefano Andrea Renier (born January 29, 1759 in Chioggia , † January 16, 1830 Padua ) was an Italian zoologist and doctor.

Life

Renier studied at the episcopal seminary in Padua and then medicine at the University of Padua, graduating as a doctor of medicine in 1781. He was at hospitals in Bologna , Florence and Pavia before he returned to Chioggia and settled as a doctor. In addition, he dealt with zoology, especially ichthyology . He was a doctor at the Health Department of Chioggia and as such was responsible for the sanitary condition of warehouses, hospitals, salt pans and other businesses. During the Napoleonic occupation he tried to negotiate the status of a free port for the city.

1806 to 1829 he was professor of natural history at the University of Padua and was director of the Natural History Museum in Padua.

After several years of work, he cataloged the mollusks of the Mediterranean with many initial descriptions. For the classification he also used the nervous system of the mollusks. One of his first works concerned the colony-forming sea squirt genus Botryllus (star ascidia). In 1818 he sold part of his collection of marine animals to the natural history cabinet in Vienna.

He also wrote school books.
