Stefano Maderno (* 1575 in Palestrina ; † September 17, 1636 in Rome ) was an Italian sculptor .

Life

Son of Antonio Maderno from Capolago and Francesca Frasca, from Palestrina, Stefano is the creator of numerous sculptures , some of them based on ancient models. In Rome he was a student of the sculptor Niccolò d'Arras. He was accepted into the San Luca Academy . His works mark the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque .

Commissioned by Cardinal Paolo Emilio Sfondrati , his main work from 1600 is the sculpture of St. Cecilia , which he is said to have created from white marble, true to the body, as it was seen when the coffin was opened around 1599. She can be seen in the church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, which is dedicated to her .

He was probably the brother of Carlo Maderno . The degree of relationship with Pietro Maino Maderno , court sculptor under Emperor Ferdinand III. is currently unclear.
