Stefano Stefani

Stefano Stefani (born September 29, 1938 in Vicenza ) is an Italian politician of the Lega Nord . Stefani caused a sensation in 2003 as the Italian State Secretary for Tourism in Germany when, in an interview with the Lega Nord party newspaper, the Germans were described as “monotonous, blonde supernationalists” who annually “attack our beaches”. After the media paid increased attention to the matter due to the summer slump, said then Chancellor Gerhard Schröderhis vacation in Italy. Stefani, who himself had been married to a German for 20 years, apologized through the Bild newspaper and submitted his resignation. Stefani's remarks briefly strained German-Italian relations.

In 2006 Stefani, who had been a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1999 to 2006, was elected to the Italian Senate as the top candidate on the Lega Nord list for Veneto . From 2008 to 2012 he was again a member of the Chamber of Deputies.
