Stefano da Verona (* 1374 in Zevio , † around 1450 in Verona ; also Stefano di Giovanni , Stefano da Zevio ) was an Italian painter .

Life

The painter has been identified by historians as "Stefano di Francia" and was probably the son of Jean d'Arbois (Iohannes de Herbosio from France). Giorgio Vasari called him Stefano da Verona and in some documents he is called Stefano di Giovanni. Stefano da Verona was married to Tarsia, a daughter of Antoniazzo da Verona, since September 18, 1399, according to a dowry contract from that year. The dowry was 300 gold ducats. There is also a will from the Tarsia da Verona. The couple had two daughters, Catalina and Zuanita, in 1425 and lived in the Isolo district of Verona. There he is referred to as a painter and the son of the late Johannis de Herbosio. Da Verona was active in Verona from 1425 to 1438 and made several frescoes. His works also include a painting of the crucifixion of Jesus that is in the possession of the Metropolitan Museum of Art . He was one of the first to paint in an elegant, decorative and poetic way in the International Gothic style. His Madonna, in an enclosed garden in Verona, is surrounded by an unreal atmosphere. The painting “Adoration of the Magi” (1435) is one of his most important works and is located in Milan .

It could not be clarified whether he was born in Paris, Padua or Verona, Evelyn Karet is of the opinion that the assumption that he was born near Verona is based on an error or mistake by Vasaris, who may have identified the place of birth with the of the Altichiero da Zevio , which he reported in the same chapter. According to her, no references to Zevio's place of birth can be found, neither in documents nor in the artist's signature.
