Stefanos Xanthoudidis

Stefanos Antoniou Xanthoudidis ( Greek Στέφανος Αντωνίου Ξανθουδίδης ; * 1864 in Avdou on Crete ; † September 19, 1928 in Heraklion ) was a Greek archaeologist and neo-Greekist . In addition to his significant contributions to the archaeological exploration of Crete, he published a critical edition of Erotokritos .

biography

He was born in the village of Avdou, 7 km south of Malia . He went to school in Avdou, then in Neapoli and finally in Heraklion. He studied philology at the University of Athens . In Heraklion he became secretary of the Education Association of Heraklion ( Greek Φιλεκπαιδευτικός Σύλλογος Ηρακλείου ). Together with Iosif Chatzidakis he drove the archaeological exploration of Crete and from 1904 to 1912 they initiated the construction of the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion . From 1900 to 1915 Stefanos Xanthoudidis was Ephoros of the Antiquities of the Cretan State and from then on Ephoros of the Antiquities of the 10th Greek Ephoria. From 1923 he became director of the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. He was involved in numerous archaeological excavations and dealt with medieval history and the language of Crete. So he dug in Dreros in 1917 . He wrote books on Cretan history, archeology and folklore.

Shortly before his death, he became a member of the Academy of Athens . On September 19, 1928, he died of a heart attack.
