Iosif Chatzidakis

Iosif Chatzidakis ( Greek Ιωσήφ Χατζηδάκης , also in the transcription Joseph Chatzidakes or Joseph Hatzidakis ; * 1848 in Milos ; † February 16, 1936 in Heraklion ) was a Greek doctor and archaeologist .

In 1881 he came to the then still Ottoman Heraklion on Crete , the home of his parents, where he worked as a doctor and gynecologist .

In 1883 he became chairman of the educational association of Heraklion ( Greek Φιλεκπαιδευτικός Σύλλογος Ηρακλείου ), at times also mayor of the city. Together with Stefanos Xanthoudidis he founded the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion and was its first director from 1883 to 1923. He was also the first Ephoros of the Antiquities of Crete. Iosif Chatzidakis carried out the first research on the Idean Grotto in 1884 . In 1886 the cave of the Eileithyia followed . After the founding of the Cretan State in 1898, he drafted the Ancient Law. In 1900 he carried out the first excavations in Knossos . In 1903 the Austrian Archaeological Institute selected him as a corresponding member. From 1902 to 1913 he carried out excavations in Tyllisos . In 1912 he explored the Arkalochori cave. In 1915 he uncovered a grave from the pre- palace period in Gournes Pediados . From 1915 to 1920 he directed the excavations at the Palace of Malia
