history

Origin and possessions

The Steger von Ladendorf come from Upper Austria and later branched out in Lower Austria. They are not to be confused with other sexes with the name Steger, such as the also extinct Steger on Sankt Veit , Lower Austrian nobility, whose coat of arms shows a cloud and a star, or Johann Steger auf Hirschstetten, Mayor of Vienna, cellar master in Austria, died 1457, as the first name bearer of this gender. The also extinct Ladendorfer (noble family) are a different clan.

The seat of the Ladendorf family was the Ladendorf Castle of the same name, today with Ladendorf Castle north of the market town of Ladendorf , Mistelbach district , Lower Austria. Hugo von Ladendorf was mentioned first in 1170, Otto von Ladendorf in 1228 and Wolfgang von Ladendorf as the last member of his family in 1454. The von Ladendorf family had to watch how the former castle was devastated in 1450 by the Bohemian mercenary leader Pangrácz von Liptau.

The Steger von Ladendorf took over the Ladendorf rulership as the new owners of Ladendorf from 1550 to 1658. For their part, this family had to watch as the castle was devastated and damaged by the Swedes in 1645. Later, however, they rebuilt the core structure from the 16th century into a square structure until, in 1658, Wilhelm Johann Anton Count Daun took care of the fortifications that had been converted into a castle. The Steger von Ladendorf had possessions in Upper Austria as well as some in Lower Austria.
