The Stone House is a historic Renaissance building in the old town of the former residential town of Meiningen . It is the oldest stone residential building in the city and is located at Anton-Ulrich-Straße 43 near the Upper Gate.

Building

The stone house is a three-storey Renaissance building with a converted attic that faces the street on the eaves side . The first floor, which dates from the 13th century and was rebuilt in 1571, consists of solid natural stone masonry with a round arched portal that sits on pillars decorated with ornaments . The inscription “Zum Steinernen Haus” is carved in the middle of the arch. The portal is crowned by a triangular gable with a coat of arms.

The entire structure of the upper floors dates back to 1571. The facade structure is designed with eight stone caryatids and herms each alternating in front of them . The facade is decorated with numerous other decorative elements. The ornamented, paired coupled window reveals are made of solid polished stone. At the northern corner there is a face mask carved in stone and above it a male bust of the same type.

The house has a north wing and a Renaissance spiral staircase tower in the inner courtyard . On the second floor of the tower, the building owners put a three-digit number as a chronostichogram with Arabic numerals. The intertwined numbers seven and eight mean the number 15, with the following number 71 this results in the year 1571.

history

The stone house was originally a half-timbered building from the 13th century. In 1571, the builders demolished the half-timbered structure and built two stone upper floors with dominant stepped gables on the existing stone base . In addition, a northern side wing facing Wassergasse was built, and a stair tower with a spiral staircase and a renaissance hood was built in the inner courtyard. The result was a residential house as a completely solid construction , which was still a specialty even in the late Middle Ages. This earned the building the name "Stone House". Because of this phenomenon, from now on the stone house was not missing on any graphic overall view of the city of Meiningen.

In 1858 the building was badly damaged by a fire. During the subsequent restoration, the restorers dispensed with the stepped gable that had existed until then. In 1904, chief building officer Eduard Fritze carried out a comprehensive reconstruction of the stone house in order to restore most of it to its original condition from 1571. The building has had various uses in its long history. In addition to residential purposes, there were always catering facilities. Today there is a bistro with a bar and a travel agency . The stone house is a listed building .
