Stelios Petrakis

Stelios Petrakis ( Greek Στέλιος Πετράκης , * 1975 in Athens ) is a Greek lyre player and instrument maker.

Petrakis grew up in Sitia on Crete and had lyre lessons from 1983 to 1993 under the direction of Kostas Mountakis with Yannis Dandalos , Ross Daly and Helen Dettrakis . From 1993 he continued his lyre training in Athens with Ross Daly and studied the musical traditions of the region (Anatolian and Greek folk music, Byzantine music) and traditional instruments (Saz, Laouto). At the Labyrinth Musical Workshops he attended seminars for Saz with Talip Ozkan and a series of seminars on traditional music and instruments of the Orient.

As a permanent member of Ross Daly's group Labyrinth , Petrakis has appeared in many well-known concert halls in Europe with musicians such as the Trio Chemirani , the group Huun-Huur-Tu , Necati Çelik , Hossein Arman , Khaled Arman , Sokratis Sinopoulos , Rufus Capadoccia , Linsey Pollak , Tunji Beier , Hammid Khabazzi and Pedram Khavar Zamini . He also worked with the World musicians Bijan Chemirani , Patrick Vaillant and Kristi Stasinopoulou , the Cretan musicians George Xylouris , Vasilis Stavrakakis , Zacharias Spyridakis , Michaelis and Mitsos Stavrakakis and other Greek musicians and composers such as Christos Leondis , Stamatis Spanoudakis , Achilleas Persidis and George Makris together.

With Thanassis Mavrokostas , Andonis and Giorgos Stavrakakis , Petrakis forms the Stelios Petrakis Quartet ( Cretan Quartet ), with whom he has appeared at festivals in India, Malaysia, the USA, Morocco, Switzerland, France and Belgium. As an instrument maker, he makes traditional instruments such as lyra, laouto and saz.
