The Stenostiridae are a newly established family of songbirds based on molecular genetic studies . The nine species of the family were previously divided into various other families, such as the fan tails , monarchs, and flycatchers .
Most of the species in the family are relatively small songbirds between 11 and 14 cm in length. Only the blue-hood flycatcher is slightly larger at 15-18 cm. Birds typically weigh between 5 and 12 g. The food of all species consists mainly of small insects and other invertebrates , which are hunted in the foliage of bushes and trees like the flycatcher.
distribution
The species of the family are distributed over the vast areas of Africa south of the Sahara, South and Southeast Asia. All are classified as safe ( least concern ) by the IUCN .
Systematics
The family was after Elfenschnäpper ( Stenostira scita designated), a South African species of bird in monotypic genus Stenostira , which was previously counted to the flycatchers (Muscicapidae). Phylogenetic studies have shown that these and other related species not to the superfamily of the flycatcher family ( Muscicapoidea count), but instead close with tits and bag chickadees are related. They are closer to the superfamily of warblers relatives ( Sylvioidea ) than to the flycatchers. The IOU currently (2018) includes the following genera and species in the family:
- Genus Chelidorhynx (formerly in Rhipidura )
- Gold-bellied fancatcher ( Chelidorhynx hypoxantha )
- Genus elven flycatcher ( Stenostira )
- Elvencatcher ( Stenostira scita )
- Genus Culicicapa
- Gray-headed Flycatcher ( Culicicapa ceylonensis )
- Grünkopfschnäpper ( Culicicapa helianthea )
- Genus Haubenschnäpper ( Elminia - partial formerly Trochocercus )
- Blue-hooded flycatcher ( Elminia longicauda )
- White-tailed crested flycatcher ( Elminia albicauda )
- Black- headed crested flycatcher , Elminia nigromitrata
- White-bellied crested flycatcher ( Elminia albiventris )
- Mountain hood flycatcher ( Elminia albonotata )
The relationships between the species within the family can, according to Fuchs et al. (2009) can be represented by the following cladogram:
