Occurrence and way of life

The animals occur in the Palearctic in Europe, in the Caucasus , in Siberia , the north of China and in Japan as well as in North America. In Europe they are absent in Northern Europe north of the Arctic Circle , in Norway they only occur in the south. In southern Europe they occur as far as the Mediterranean, but their distribution is more limited to the mountainous inland areas than the coast. The species is common and widespread everywhere in Central Europe from the flatlands to subalpine locations. It inhabits poorly or not overgrown banks of waters that are covered with sand or mud. They are among the first to inhabit freshly dug ground. The species is not found in forests. The animals can be seen walking around on sunny days; they appear from spring to autumn. The wintering takes place under leaves in the bank area.
