Stenus longipes is a beetle from the family of the short-winged (Staphylinidae).
features
The beetles reach a body length of 5 to 5.5 millimeters. The wings have a yellow, round discal patch. The legs of the animals are colored black. Only the first part of the jaw palpation is light, the others are black. The yellow discal spot is slightly larger than that of the similar stenus biguttatus . The body is built more slender than that of Stenus bipunctatus . The back of the head is not keeled.
Occurrence and way of life
The species occurs in the southern Palearctic . It is common in southern Europe, southern central Europe, the Caucasus , northern Iran, Asia Minor , Siberia and Manchuria . It is not common in Central Europe and only widespread locally. The animals colonize loamy banks of streams and other bodies of water and often appear in company with S. bipunctatus . Sandy areas are only populated when they are muddy. They can also be found in damp places in clay pits, on embankments or in fields under stones. Stenus longipes occurs from April to October, the adults often fly in the evening.
