Stephan Auer (diplomat)

Stephan Auer (born November 17, 1961 in Tangier ) is a German diplomat . He has been ambassador to Ethiopia since 2020 . Before that he was ambassador to South Korea .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1979, Stephan Auer began studying law and political science and passed the first state examination in 1985. After military service (1986–1987) and legal clerkship (1987–1988), he began preparatory service for the senior foreign service in 1988.

Auer is married and has two children.

career

After completing his preparatory service for the higher foreign service, Auer worked from 1990 to 1991 in the Disarmament Department of the Foreign Office, from 1991 to 1994 at the Embassy in London and from 1994 to 1997 in the security policy department of the Foreign Office. After working at the Riyadh Embassy (1997–2001), he became Deputy Head of Unit in the European Department of the Foreign Office. In 2004 he was transferred to the embassy in Rome as head of the political department. In 2007 he returned to the European Department of the Federal Foreign Office, where he became head of department and in 2010 he was appointed to the economic department.

In 2013 he was appointed Deputy Head of Human Rights, Global Issues and Multilateral Affairs at the European External Action Service .

In 2016 Auer was appointed ambassador to Seoul ( South Korea ) as the successor to Rolf Mafael . After four years in Seoul, Auer moved to Addis Ababa , Ethiopia as ambassador in 2020 .
